Why is it important to buy Fairtrade Sugar?
To date, Fairtrade sugar has had considerable success in the UK. In 2013 over £5.5 million of Fairtrade Premium went to producer groups in countries from Belize to Zambia. Approximately 40% of the sugar sold in shops in the UK today is Fairtrade.
However, the price that big buyers of sugar (such as soft drinks companies and retailers) pay in the EU has crashed by around 30% since the beginning of this year, sending shockwaves down the supply chain that will hit these farmers in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries the hardest.
