Fairtrade Baking in Schools

Volunteers will be baking in schools in the area using Fairtrade Ingredients. Talking to children about ethical choices when shopping and what can be found out from labelling on products that they buy.

The Derbyshire Dales District Council Fairtrade Committee is searching the Derbyshire Dales for the best Primary School Writer and Story Teller

How the competition works:

KS1 – Children are asked to create a colourful character to use in an advert. Their character should have a name and be linked to cocoa or chocolate and Fairtrade. Their work can be hand drawn or produced on a computer and should be A4 in size.

Lower KS2 – Children are asked to think up a snappy persuasive slogan of three or four words to encourage their readers to buy Fairtrade Chocolate. Their slogan should be incorporated into a poster A4 in size. The work can be hand drawn or produced on a computer.

Upper KS2 – Children are asked to write a short story or a poem to help the reader understand why buying Fairtrade chocolate is important. The story should be no more than 500 words (approximately one side of

A4). Entries to be produced on a computer where possible.

Your school can enter one, two or all three categories.

The research for the work can be done at school or set as homework.

The first round of the competition will be judged within your school and one winner can be chosen from each category. Each school should send their winners to be entered into the next round of the competition.

Fairtrade Fortnight runs from 24th February – 8th March, 2020. This year’s theme is about sharing stories.

To find useful video clips browse films, filter by – age group, then product – cocoa.

All pieces of work received will be entered into the second round of the competition where they will be judged along with other schools’ prize winners from within their town or local area. A prize winner will be chosen from each category and the winners awarded prizes. The prize winners will then be entered into the 2020 Derbyshire Dales Grand Final to choose the Best Derbyshire Dales Fairtrade Writer.

Entries can be sent by email as attachments or posted.  Art work can be scanned if sending as an attachment.

All entries should be marked on the reverse side with the child’s name, school and KS category.

The winning entry will also be forwarded to the Fairtrade Foundation and may get national recognition.
